    Before I Go Away

A 21-year-old construction worker died in a crane accident in Maryland Heights Tuesday morning.

Steven Lillicrap was a subcontractor with Ben Hur Construction. He was working on a new Edward Jones building with McCarthy Construction when he got caught in a crane.

The accident happened just after 9 a.m. Lillicrap was disassembling a crane when police say his safety harness somehow got caught in the cables.

"We showed up and had one worker that was trapped within some of the lattice work on some of the cable

cranes," said Deputy Chief Steve Rinehart, Maryland Heights Fire Department.

The large steel cables crushed Lillicrap's arm and chest. Workers used a second crane to free him, but he was unconscious.

"We extricated him, got him in the ambulance and transported him," Rinehart said.

He died at the hospital a short time later.

McCarthy Brothers Construction, which manages the site, said in a statement, "We are greatly saddened by this tragic incident and wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and to all the employees at Ben Hur Construction."

This is the second time rescue crews have responded to the site for a major accident in the last three months.

OSHA has no record of the first accident here at this site, but a McCarthy spokesperson said it happened back in November 2008 when a dry-waller broke his collar bone. The worker was trapped between the building and an external elevator.

OSHA was not involved because it was not fatal and only one person was hurt. A supervisor said the worker made a mistake. He's still recovering, but McCarthy Brothers suspended him from the site for safety violations.

OSHA is now investigating this and any past incidents. McCarthy Brothers said it won't know what really went wrong until the investigation is over.

A McCarthy Brothers spokesperson said safety is the top priority on site. The company incident rate is four times better than the industry average.

McCarthy Construction plans to do its own investigation and take another look at on-site safety.

I would first like to start by saying that the stevens family is in my prayers and I am sorry to hear about their loss, but I would like to say that the accident that happened in November was very close to being fatal and that worker is still recovering. He spent weeks in the hospital and it was more than just a collar bone, in fact it wasn't a collar bone at all, it was internal injuries and many broken bones. This worker was not suspended from the jobsite because he has not returned to work from the incident, he is still injured. OSHA was also at the seen when this incident happened. Again my prayers go out to the stevens family and I wish all of the contructions workers to be as careful as possible accidents do happen it is no one's fault.

I too am so aware of the construction accidents as I lost a person very dear to me in an accident(Ironworker) years ago-It is going to be interesting to see how the "Company" protects themselves in this one-If you know your job is hazardous and do it anyway, you are on your own. My prayers are with the family now.

I am glad to see the people who leave negative comments about unions are no where to be found on this story. It is a sad day for all trades men and my prayers go out to the family.

Very sad and horrible to hear this.My prayers and condolences go out to Stevens family.I am a 3rd year apprentice and operator myself.I must say it is easy to become complacent on the job site. Its easy to overlook what could happen,or to see all the dangers out there when you deal with these dangers on a day to day basis. In december i had a friend loose some fingers in an accident.Cranes are very dangerous to work on or around for all tradesmen.I am an oiler and i must say i try be as careful as possible, but i am an apprentice and i learn something every day.I know my operator is always watching out for me too,but he cant see everything. In closing,if you see something unsafe,or think you have a better way, step up and say something,it could save someones life. Brings back a lots of bad memories of the past years: These accidents happens so fast and in a second your disabled for life or your life is ended.

Thoughts are with all in the Construction Trades Unions as many workers have been killed are disabled over the years.

SocoMom and Precision01 - there wasn't a fatal at this site, but there was an accident where a worker was trapped between the construction elevator and the building. It was in the Fall if I recall.
