The MCCGSL Heritage

The History Of MCC of Greater St. Louis:

Metropolitan Community Church of Greater St. Louis is part of an international denomination with 52,000 members worshiping in 314 congregations in 16 countries.

It was founded by the Rev. Troy Perry in October 1968 to express the simple message of “God’s love for all” regardless of sexual orientation or identity.

The MCCGSL website chronicles the church’s local history:

• The first public Worship Service was in Oct. 28, 1973.

The Rev. Carol Cureton pastored with 10 people in attendance in rented space

from Berea Presbyterian located at 3010 Olive Blvd.

• On April 24, 1974, MCCGSL became a chartered church in MCC and bought property at

5108 Waterman, making it the first gay and lesbian organization in St. Louis to own property.

• The Waterman building was sold in 1984 and the church secured a church building at

1120 Dolman.

Under the Rev. Brad Wishon, the building on Dolman was sold in November 1996 due to the financial demands of caring for an old historic church building.

From Nov 1996 - Dec 2007  Space was then rented at St. John’s United Methodist Church at

5000 Washington Place and continued until that church was closed in 2007.

• Since Jan. 6, 2008, worship has continued at 112 Sidney St. near the Soulard area with offices at 4247 S. Grand Blvd.

• June 2008  , MCCGSL closes on 1919 S. Broadway, with a $2 million dollar renovation plan. Current plans estimate services will be held at the new facility around the spring of 2009.

• June 21, 2009  , MCCGSL holds it's first

worship service at 1919 S. Broadway.

A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held.

• August 30, 2009, the Dedication of

the sanctuary was held, officiated by Rev. Elder Lillie Brock.

September 26, 2009, Grand opening

Celebration, community wide event

with participants, Band Together, Gateway Mens Chorus, Symetry, Fruit Jam, CHARIS, and the MCCGSL Choir.

Officiated by MCC Moderator, Rev. Elder Nancy Wilson.   Elder Wilson served more than a decade as the Senior Pastor of the founding MCC congregation in Los Angeles, and is the second Moderator of MCC, following the founder of MCC in 1968, Rev. Troy Perry.

**I will always recall Pride 2007, with its drenched days.
And Daniel wandering thru the Central West End, on his way to pride.
For the record, he never made it there, (long story) but I will always remember that weekend, the rest of my days.  About a week later, on the 4th of July, he left Saint Louis, for vacation in Florida.
As well as the last time most anyone "saw" him in person.  I came accross this video (again) in August 2008 and knew immediatley it belonged here.

Daniel was an active participant and leader of several ministries of MCCGSL during the time the congregation met at St. Johns United Methodist in the Central West End.

It was his Sunday ritual, to wake up in Belleville, and take the metrolink train west into the city.  (Notoriously arriving for worship about 10min late, but nonetheless- Never a reason not to come.    One one sunday, he was SO late, the service was over... So he wandered accross the street to another service being held.

VALUES STATEMENT
A "Values Statement" sets the basic beliefs and boundaries of opportunity in which individuals and groups within the congregation can live out the mission and vision statements. It provides the subtle boundaries that approve or discourage certain attitudes and behaviors.

As the Metropolitan Community Church of Greater St. Louis, we highly value the following:

Authenticity - our demonstration of being dependably and genuinely open, direct and truthful, while at the same time being considerate, respectful and fair. Authentic people are consistently trusted to be pure in their motivation and honest in relating with others.

Grace - our expression of creating, cultivating and sustaining a church culture of love, trust and appreciation. As believers who demonstrate grace with dignity, we gratefully receive God’s love, mercy, forgiveness, kindness and compassion and then seek to extend this same grace to all we meet.

Generosity - the giving of our time, talents and financial resources to MCC and the general community. Generous people look for involvement in opportunities to give while expecting nothing in return. The blessings of generosity are in the very acts themselves.

Justice - the belief that all people should live equally full and enriching lives. People who work for justice realize that the peace we feel in our hearts and the measure of God’s love we have been given are not for us alone. Living out justice means going beyond ourselves to work eagerly for rightness and righteousness of God’s will in our diverse society.

Growth - challenging ourselves and others, striving for excellence, maintaining principled self-discipline and demonstrating maturity, positive thinking and spiritual devotion. We as individuals and as a church seek continued growth and also endeavor to include, empower and develop others
